Some of the major duties of this department include providing interpreter services for our Yup’ik speaking patients and providers, and assisting handicapped and Elders throughout the hospital. We also serve as the initial coordinating link and contact person between patients and other areas of the hospital by acting as greeters, providing information to patients and providers on contract health issues and assisting patients with filling out Patient Comment forms, as well as locating wheelchairs and security when necessary for patients.

We are encouraged to use interpreters whenever possible rather than relying on family or other YKHC staff to translate. We also have a telephonic language line for additional support in other languages.

The Hospital Community Relations department operates 11 hours a day, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. After hours, weekends, and holidays, personnel are on call.
